The manuscript of this book was found in John Burlison’s attic
after his death in 2023. It was written in the 1980s when John
was a Gurkha officer based in Pokhara. Each year he trekked for
hundreds of miles, visiting remote communities to recruit Gurkha
soldiers and provide welfare support to soldiers’ families. As well
as being a memorial to John, this book records John’s nomadic
life and lets us glimpse into the hearts and minds of Nepal and its
people. His love of Nepal and commitment to the Gurkhas is also
commemorated in the Burlison Room in the Gurkha Museum in
Pokhara, where copies of this book will always be available.
All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the Gurkha Welfare Trust.
